There’s nothing like having an insider’s view of a new city when you first move in. The Midtown Houston area has plenty of places to eat and imbibe, and we’ve selected some of our favorites to give you a starting point for a good night out.

If you’re in the mood for good grub and libations after unpacking all those boxes, check out some of these local hotspots close to Ashton on West Dallas.

Classic Mexican at Hugo’s

If you want Mexican done right, Hugo’s is your place. It’s owned by Chef Hugo Ortega, who immigrated from Mexico himself. He was named “Chef of the Year” at the recent Houston Culinary Awards.

Hugo’s is open for lunch and dinner during the week and offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Stop by the bar for happy hour from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and sip a margarita, classic mojito or the sangria of the day. Hugo’s also offers a wine and tequila list.

Outdoor Ambiance at Backstreet Cafe

If you enjoyed Hugo’s, you’ll probably like Backstreet Cafe too – they’re both owned by the same award-winning chef. Backstreet Cafe offers more American fare, with steaks and seafood dishes on the menu. They offer a premium wine selection and the bar features a sangria of the day, beer of the month and cocktail of the month.

Besides the food and wine, Backstreet Cafe is most known for its “backyard” seating on a New-Orleans style patio surrounded by shrubs, flowers and trees.

Steak and Wine at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse

Feeling like a good hunk of steak? Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse is your prime spot. Their steaks are aged and cooked to your order, and they have shrimp, sauces, butter and more to pair with your choice of cut.

Maybe even more impressive than their steak is their wine menu, with 100 selections available by the glass from regions all over the world. Finish off the night with a “Drinkable Dessert” from the bar, featuring coctails like the bourbon peach martini and chocolate truffle martini. The bar runs drink specials every night until 7:00 p.m., with $6 wines, cocktails and appetizers.
